Position Description

Job Title: Children’s Minister
Reports To:  Senior Pastor
Location/Hours: Church on Sunday mornings; other hours flexible during the week
FLSA Status: Salary, Part-time, 25 Hours/week

Flower Mound United Methodist Church is seeking a 25 hour per week Children's Minister to provide vision, leadership and connection with children and their families. This includes engaging with families in relational ways to grow the larger church, providing resources to equip parents for faith development at home and offering regular programming to grow children in Christian discipleship. The Children's Minister position requires an ability to collaborate across a variety of ministry areas as well creating a welcoming and nurturing environment in the church for children and their families. Additionally, the Children's Minister will lead programming for children on Sunday mornings and afternoons with the goal of growing new disciples for Jesus Christ through the ministry of the United Methodist Church.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Role: Minister to Children within Church + Community
  Responsibilities

  • In consultation with church staff and leadership, provide vision for children’s ministry growth and implementation of that vision
  • Create meaningful ways to connect children to the church + the church members to children in collaboration with
    • Outreach team to plan Spring Festival/ Fall Festival
    • Worship team with Advent Celebration, Children’s Sabbath, Acolyte Scheduling, Blessing of Backpacks, Christmas Pageant, Baptism Celebrations, PB and Jam singing
    • Pastoral and Care team connected to support children in death of family member or, pet, hospitalization, anxiety
    • Missions team for child appropriate engagement into Sunday school, Children’s Church, 4th/ 5th grade ministry
  • Engage families in relational ways helping them connect to the larger church – including Follow up with new families who have joined the church, follow up after extended absences, to offer child faith development support, provide care in times of family care need.
  • Teach + remind children they are a beloved + needed part of the church community.
  • Relational development of families who are current members
  • Provide resources for families to engage in faith development at home
  • Volunteer recruitment and engagement in connection with youth department/ CNLD
  • Attend weekly staff meeting
  • Coordinate with communications department regarding children’s ministry program communications

Role: Provide Weekly Children’s Programing
  Responsibilities

  • Present for Sunday morning programing from 9-11 AM to ensure set up, greet families and do check in/ dismissal
  • Teach as needed and ensure volunteers available and trained for Sunday school and be present throughout children’s Sunday school to offer support.
  • Provide curriculum for + Lead PB and JAM on Sunday evenings in coordination with music department
  • Ensure volunteers for PB and JAM equipped with needed training
  • Utilize curriculum for United Methodist Bible-based lessons + children’s activities.
  • Develop and lead programming for  4/5th graders transition into youth program in coordination with youth department
  • Represent children’s ministry in the faith formation team meetings and outreach teams

Role: Lead + Support Children in Worship

    Responsibilities

  • Attend Sunday morning worship leaders meeting as needed.
  • Provide weekly Children’s Sermons for worship (currently 11 AM service only).
  • Assist in special Sundays celebrating Children, such as Bible Presentation Sunday, Children’s Sabbath, Sonshine Kids Preschool Celebration, Vacation Bible School Celebration.
  • Support children’s participation + presence in worship Train + oversee child acolytes for 11 AM worship service.

Role: Create Church + Staff Collaboration

   Responsibilities

  • Attend staff meetings weekly + staff program planning meetings on Tuesday mornings (as available)
  • Besides scheduled meetings, flexible office hours throughout the week – though week s around special events will require more intensive hours.
  • Coordinate with Nursery, Youth + Music ministries + staff to collaborate in programming + scheduling.
  • Ensure representation of Children’s Ministry at Church Administrative Council meetings.
  • In consultation with pastoral staff, assist with pastoral care of children + their families.

Role: Equip Children’s Ministry Team for Program Support + Special Events
    Responsibilities

  • Equip volunteers to regularly teach + supervise weekly programs – utilizing current church safety practices + policies.
  • Meet regularly with children’s ministry team to provide vision and implementation of vision, equip and empower leadership. Manage children’s ministry budgeting in consultation with finance coordinator
